Artists House has released a CD/DVD package of Gerry Mulligan which features The Age of Steam recording, a master class, a documentary and interviews.
Titled The Age of Steam, the DVD contains over four hours of content, including the 90 minute documentary, 90 minute master class and interviews with many of the participants in Mulligan’s record of The Age of Steam album. The DVD also features over 700 pages of music from the album – all the arrangements and parts for the songs – which can be printed from a computer.
The DVD, which was produced in conjunction with the Jazz Studies Program and the Music Industry Studies Program at Loyola University in New Orleans, is available for purchase through Artists House website and is available at no cost to educators.
Artists House will also be distributing additional DVDs in careers in the arts and of jazz master classes produced in conjunction with New York University. Featured classes include musicians Hank Jones, the Heath Brothers, Barry Harris, Cecil Taylor and Clark Terry.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
