George Wein Unloads $1 Million on BU

Maybe it’s just because it’s jazz festival season, but George Wein is making lots of news these days. On Thursday the festival producer, along with his wife, Joyce, proved why he derserved the Medal of Honor recently awarded to him by the National Arts Club (see Jazz News 6/6/03) by announcing a $1 million gift to Boston University (BU).

The money will be used to underwrite the creation of a George and Joyce Wein Chair in BU’s African American Studies program. Boston University Chancellor John Silber accepted the gift and Allison Blakely, a professor in BU’s African American Studies program and author of Blacks in the Dutch World: the Evolution of Racial Imagery in a Modern Society, was announced as the first incumbent of the Wein Chair.

George Wein graduated from Boston University in 1950 and met Joyce while studying there, though she was attending school at nearby Simmons College.
