Interested in hearing great music for free? On June 29, a free concert will be given in Manhattan to honor composer, arranger and bandleader Arturo “Chico” O’Farrill. O’Farill will have the corner at 88th Street and West End Avenue named after him to commemorate his time living on that corner from the mid-1960s until his death in 2001. The corner will be complete with a sign designating “Arturo ‘Chico’ O’Farrill Place.”
The Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra – conducted by Chico’s son, Arturo – with special guest Wynton Marsalis will perform beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Riverside Park at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Riverside Drive between 88th and 89th Streets. Following the concert, at 8 p.m., will be the street corner renaming ceremony.
