Fred Horn: Relaxin’ in Milwaukee

For a smooth tenor player like Fred Horn, the best way to relax in the beer capital is to come up with a pitcher of “head” arrangements. (Well, better than hip hops.) Actually there is one track with some rock drumming and one that is totally free and experimental. The other eight focus on first-rate, straightahead jazz, brewing some Rollins and Parker with Horn originals.

It’s a fun session. Some intensity, some lyrical moments, mostly, as advertised, relaxin’-especially his shuffling staccato line on “Fred’s Blues.” Great support, particularly from pianist Dr. Barry Velleman.
