Fred Hopkins/Dierdre Murray Quartet: Prophecy

This 1990 recording is a bit hard to describe. The group sound is very tight, as Murray’s compositions reflect classical influence, but there is also a sort of chamber jazz-rock feeling to some of the proceedings, largely because of the heavily synthesized sound of Branson Ross’ guitar. Murray’s cello combines with Ross in interesting ways, Newman Baker is an understated dramatist on drums and Hopkins’ huge sound provides momentum. The feeling is very arranged and controlled, sort of like updated Chico Hamilton.
