Festival of New Trumpet Music starts tonight in NYC

Kicking off tonight in New York City is the 4th Annual Festival of New Trumpet Music. Curated by Dave Douglas (pictured), Roy Campbell and Jon Nelson, the month-long concert series presents the best and brightest jazz trumpeters performing all over the city. The Festival of New Trumpet Music, or FONT, has also commissioned new works from five composers to be performed on Oct. 3, 4 and 5. FONT also boasts masterclasses and $10 concerts taking place at The Yamaha Artist Services Center each Sunday through Oct. 8.

Founded in 2003 by Douglas and Campbell, FONT aims to showcase the wide stylistic range of trumpet music with over 60 performances exploring avant-garde, experimental, jazz, hip-hop, rock, classical and much more.

The festivities begin tonight at Rose Live Music (345 Grand St., Brooklyn) with performances by Ben Neill, Eric Biondo and the Vector Trio. Tomorrow night (Saturday), Douglas and Campbell will appear in “A Living Tribute to Don Cherry” at Merkin Hall.
