Fernando Huergo: Living These Times

The Argentinian Fernando Huergo, who plays electric and acoustic bass, offers an eclectic mix of tangos, sambas, and rumbas filtered through a jazz sensibility. He pays tribute to the deceased pianists Argentinian Jorge Dalto and Cuban Emiliano Salvador on “Zamba para Jorge and Emiliano.” The zamba is an Argentine variation of the Brazilian rhythm. “How High the Moon” is arranged as a rumba. The tango “La Agonia Del Rufian Melancolico” features saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart. Other strong contributors to this intelligent, diverse release are conguero Pernell Saturnino, pianist Allain Mallet, who has a fine solo on “The Reason Why We Don’t Get Along,” and vocalist Grazyna Auguscik, heard on “Lejania.”
