Evan Parker and Ghost in the Machine: Ghost in the Machine/Evan Parker

This 1993 Copenhagen concert was a natural collaboration for saxophonist Parker and Ghost-in-the-Machine, a quartet of mostly Danish musicians who use electronic and amplified instruments and “objects” associated with musique concrete and early electronic composers, and voice. The quintet enjoys working out strategies that will enhance the sonic pointillism and scattershot microtonal emphases of these nine performances. Parker delivers on occasion, such as “The Base Piano,” a garrulous tenor, and an insinuating soprano for “Train;” but otherwise he subdues the often riveting presence of his style for the benefit of the collective ensemble. There are moments on this CD giving the impression of no sound of music in the broadest sense, the focus being on space as much as the tiny elements of style.
