Now in its 23rd year, the Estoril Jazz festival has had a long time to build its reputation as a different kind of jazz festival, which is good. Held every summer in the Portugal town from which it takes its name, the event is spread out over two weeks, and only five concerts are presented. The small lineup and the fact that only one concert is performed each night (save for a two-band concert on Thursday) allow the bands to stretch out during their sets.
This year Estoril Jazz will feature a few star artists, most notably Wayne Shorter (pictured), who’ll take the stage with his quartet at Palmela Park Auditorium on July 12. About a week prior to that, the festival will kickoff with a performance by the Jazz at the Philharmonic tribute, JATP Today. Ralph Peterson, the Vanguard Orchestra and a couple of Portugeuse bands round out the Estoril lineup (see schedule below), and a sixth concert featuring Dave Holland will be held in nearby Lisbon on July 18 as an Estoril Jazz co-production.
If you choose to attend each of the Estoril Jazz 2003 concerts held from July 4-18, you’ll have plenty of time to experience other things that part of the globe has to offer (read: lovely beaches and sunsets). For tickets, call 210 03 6300 or fax 217 94 0389. The festival has an official hotel, the Hotel Vila Gale Estoril, a four-star joint within half a mile of the concert venue that can be reached by phone at 214 64 8400, by fax at 214 64 8432, or by e-mail at [email protected]
