Eric T. Johnson: The Boston Quartets

Eric Johnson is a convincing, sweet, jazz guitar player. This album features him out front of two quartet settings.

The first group, from 1996, includes the trumpet of Phil Grenadier, plus bass and drums. The group achieves interesting balance between the horn and trumpet voicings on some jazz classics, plus a laconic ballad. The second set, from 1994, is a standard quartet, with Johnson’s guitar, and the piano/bass/drum of Bruce Flowers, Bob Nieske and Alan Dawson. This set also includes jazz standards, setting off Johnson’s guitar, which, while it can swing, aims for the softer dynamics of the instrument and more off-center harmonics that lend a pleasing touch.
