Eric Allison: After Hours

The title sets the mood and Eric Allison’s music lives up to the Erskine Hawkins ’40s hit. The 45-year-old Florida reedsman penned nine originals of the same ilk, playing tenor, alto, flute and clarinet with a swinging style influenced by Bud Freeman, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker.

Allison’s alto is searing and Dr. Lonnie Smith’s B-3 organ soulful on “‘Round About Dawn.” The leader takes to tenor for a gospel-infused “Sittin’ In,” turning to flute against Turk Mauro’s baritone on “Tip-Toein’.” Then he pulls out the clarinet for the N’Awlins-style “Delta.” The septet also features John Bailey on trumpet, Jesse Jones, Jr. on alto, Turk Mauro on baritone, Dennis Marks on bass and Danny Burger on drums.
