Earl Gaines: Everything’s Gonna Be Alright

Shelton’s onetime labelmate at Excello Records, singer Earl Gaines, takes a more rough-hewn route on Everything’s Gonna Be Alright (Black Top 1150; 42:48). Producer James assembled the same cast of supporting characters behind this distinctive vocalist, who delivers with husky authority on the rousing shuffles “Two Lovers Are Better Than One” and “Every Night in the Week.” He croons with dark hues on two slow blues, “Sittin’ Here Drinkin'” and “The Same Thing,” and on the R&B ballad “I’ll Carry a Torch,” and he swings with finesse on “Brandi and Champagne.” Gaines lets the good times roll on the novelty number here, “Your Butt’s Too Big,” and carries that sentiment over to the hard-grooving “You Put a Spell on Me” and the raucous, rocking closer, “Is It Good to You Baby.” Everything’s Gonna Be Alright should be in heavy rotation at every barbecue, crawfish boil, and tailgate party thoughout America.
