Though the subgenre known as dub music was created and defined by reggae producers King Tubby, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly & Robbie and Augustus Pablo, it has always been my contention that UK dubologists Jah Shaka, Mad Professor, Adrian Sherwood, Dennis Bovell, Michael Campbell have been most innovatively forward.
Kelvin R.’s Dub Funk Association collective is the burning spearhead of next level UK dub. Aptly-titled, Sounds Of The Heavyweight is all about cris’ hi-hat, snare/kick one-drop reverb, ranting ghost MCs, scrambled keyboard-horn-guitar transmissions, hip hop breakbeats and 2,000 volts of ugly roughneck bass. Kodak Moment: “Dance A Yard” (“Exodus” as nyahbinghi reggae tech-step.)
