Drori Mondlak: Point in Time

Drummer-composer Drori Mondlak joins longtime cohort Cary DeNigris on guitar, veteran bassist Steve LaSpina and alto saxophonist Karolina Strassmayer on this rewarding session. Strassmayer solos with remarkable fluency and conviction on the loosely swinging, time-shifting “Sweet Tooth.” The drummer delivers a thoughtful arrangement of Frank Foster’s lovely “Simone” and turns in an expressive solo on Strassmayer’s lyrical 5/4 vehicle “It Once Was a Waltz.” DeNigris, a monster player, provides some fretboard thrills on his slow “I’ve Paid Some Blues,” and he blows with legato abandon on his angular, funky “No Name Blues.” Guitarist and drummer close the session with the playfully interactive duet “The Prance.”
