Dingobats: Follow

The Dingobats are another example of Norwegian musicians who thoroughly know their way around composition, harmony and complete group integration, not just heads and solos. The quintet’s second album, Follow (Jazzaway), touches on Jaga Jazzist-like ensemble-oriented pieces such as “Korn” and “Giraffe,” and Charlie Haden-style country-jazz balladry, as on “Enjoy,” which features the slide-soaked electric guitar of Thomas T. Dahl. Backing the deep, rich harmonic interplay of Dahl, alto and baritone saxophonist Eirik Hegdal (the group’s leader and primary composer) and tenor player Njal Olnes is the rhythm section of Mats Eilertsen (bass) and Sverre Gjorvad (drums), who provide flexible, nicely off-kilter accompaniment.
