On October 12 Prestige will release Dexter Gordon: The Complete Prestige Recordings, an 11-disc box set boasting 17 previously unreleased tracks that compiles all of the long, tall tenor man’s work for the label.
Gordon appeared on 15 Prestige albums from 1960-73, cutting albums like The Panther and Generation as a leader and working as a sideman for Prestige artists like Booker Ervin. All of this work-including a 1950 session led by trumpeter Wardell Gray, the dates Gordon co-led with fellow tenor player Gene Ammons, and even a non-Prestige session made for Jazzland that yielded 1960’s The Resurgence of Dexter Gordon-is included in the set. Other musicians on these various sessions include Jaki Byard, Clark Terry, Buster Williams, James Moody, Barry Harris, Bobby Timmons, Juniro Mance, Tommy Flnagan and Wynton Kelly.
The set’s 11 discs come packaged in six jewel cases, which are contained in a no-frills box that’ll fit nicely on your shelves. The box also includes a 46-page booklet with notes by jazz writer Ted Panken, photographs and a track list detailing session date, personnel and what proper album each track originally appeared on.
