Delmark has announced four new albums slated for an August 14 release:
Guitarist Bobby Broom (pictured left) makes his Delmark debut with Modern Man. This album features two players from George Benson’s mid-’60s quartet, sax player Ronnie Cuber and keyboardist Dr. Lonnie Smith. Drummer Idris Muhammad elevates the proceedings with a conversational, New Orleans-flavored swing.
Pianist Jodie Christian’s Reminiscing is his fifth for Delmark, but is the first to feature him predominantly in the trio setting. A native of Chicago, Christian explains that “These songs are a reflection of my musical heritage.”
Malachi Thompson’s Talking Horns brings together two political-cultural organizations developed in the ’60s, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago and the Black Artist Group (BAG) in St. Louis. The album features AACM trumpeter Thompson playing with two BAG members, saxophonists Oliver Lake and Hamiet Bluiett.
Kahil El’Zabar and Billy Bang collaborated to produce Spirits Entering. The duo recording features avant-garde explorations between El’Zabar’s percussion and drums and Bang’s emotional and fiery violin expressions.
