Dave Pike: Bophead

This exuberant, hard-swinging CD showcases an exciting talent. Pike established himself in the late ’50s as an original voice on vibes, recording with Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Paul Bley, Tommy Flanagan and Herbie Hancock. He joined Herbie Mann in the early ’60s and is featured on Family of Mann and other Atlantic releases. From 1968 onward he led the Europe-based Dave Pike Set.

After a serious illness and an accident that shattered his left arm, now, after 12 years, the legend is back! Pike’s angular intensity incites him to risks, and his abstract harmonies evoke Bud Powell and Bird. He enjoys marvelous support from Anthony Wilson (guitar), winner of the Monk Jazz Composers competition; Lorca Hart, drums (son of Billy Hart), with “Tootie” Heath on four tracks; Milcho Leviev or Jane Getz, piano; Richard Simon, bass; and the veteran tenorman Teddy Edwards, on two tracks. Tunes include “Dig” by Miles; Jackie McLean’s “Dr. Jackle” and “Little Melonae,” the title track by Pike and his ballad “Touch the Moon” and “Grand Street” by Sonny Rollins.
