Dave Douglas’ Freakin’ Year

It looks to be a monster year for the man Stanley Crouch loves to tool on. In addition to turning 40, trumpeter Dave Douglas will celebrate the release of his fantastic new CD, Freak In (RCA/Bluebird), and embark on a big tour with his electrified septet to support the jazztronica-fueled disc. (You can read all about Douglas and Freak In it in the current issue of JazzTimes.

February 18 is when Freak In hits the stores, and the next day Douglas and his septet-featuring tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, guitarist David Gilmore, keyboardist Jamie Saft, turntablist DJ Olive, bassist Brad Jones and drummer Derrek Phillips-start out on their two-month trek, which travels as follows:

After Douglas returns from Europa, he’ll commence his career-retrospective 40th birthday celebration at the Jazz Standard. The trumpeter will be appearing with 10 groups in six nights, and it’ll go something like this:
