D.C. to Host First Annual Duke Ellington Jazz Festival

Dave Brubeck (pictured), Wayne Shorter and Arturo O’Farrill are some of the cats who will stop by Washington, D.C. this coming weekend as the city hosts its first annual Duke Ellington Jazz Festival. Beginning tomorrow and concluding on Sunday, venues on D.C.’s U Street corridor will host a multitude of concerts, including a free concert on Saturday at the National Mall. The free concert will have performances by the Wayne Shorter Quartet featuring Brian Blade, John Patitucci and Danilo Perez; Wallace Roney Sextet; Chuck Brown; the Dirty Dozen Brass Band; Sunny Sumter; and Jerry Gonzalez & the Fort Apache Band.

Wednesday, Sept. 27

  • Stacey Kent, Blues Alley 8 p.m./10 p.m.
  • International Jazz Showcase: Fahir Atakoglu Trio (Turkey), Bohemian Caverns 8 p.m./10 p.m.
  • Gala: Dave Brubeck Quartet, Lincoln Theatre 8 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 28

  • Ridgetop Syncopators, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage 6 p.m. FREE
  • International Jazz Showcase: Paul Zauner Quartet (Austria), Bohemian Caverns 8 p.m./10 p.m.
  • Larry Coryell Trio with Victor Bailey and Lenny White, Blue Alley 8 p.m./10 p.m.
