D.C. Hosts Women in Jazz Fest

Geri Allen (pictured), Luciana Souza, Jane Bunnett and Janis Siegel are among the female performers scheduled to play at the Ninth Annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival from May 13-16 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Under the artistic leadership of Kennedy Center jazz advisor Dr. Billy Taylor, the D.C. arts institution will, in addition to presenting concerts, provide space for all-female jazz jam sessions and seminars and discussions on women in jazz.

In addition to the women mentioned above, the festival will also feature performances by bassist Miriam Sullivan and the Nitty Gritty Factor, pianist Jessica Williams, vocalist LaVerne Butler, violinist Karen Briggs and reedist Carol Sudhalter. Tickets are required for those shows; ticket info is available at the Kennedy Center Web site. On May 13 and 16, the IAJE-Sisters in Jazz Collegiate All-Stars will perform free concerts on the Center’s Millennium Stage.

On May 14 Singer Siegel will host a vocal workshop in the Center’s Terrace Gallery at 3 p.m. Later that day Dr. Tammy Kernodle, author of the new Williams biography, Soul on Soul: The Life and Music of Mary Lou Williams, will host a discussion on the pianist-composer’s life and legacy.
