Curtis Lundy: Just Be Yourself

Evidence has wisely reissued this 1985 recording by bassist Curtis Lundy. On it, Lundy, just a few years past his Betty Carter schooling, demonstrates his talents as a soloist, an ensemble player and vocal accompanist. He jams here with longtime friend and musical partner saxophonist Bobby Watson and other contemporaries vibist Steve Nelson and drummer Kenny Washington. His sister Carmen Lundy treats us to two vocal tracks, and the ever elegant Hank Jones occupies the piano chair.

A disciple of Paul Chambers, Lundy aptly stirs up the mix throughout. Listen to his bass line on Carmen’s tune, “Never Gonna Let You Go;” he arouses interest, as does his solo in the same tune, and the unison refrain of his “Jabbo’s Revenge” is a teasing touch.

The other tunes, by Watson, Nelson, Horace Silver and Diz and Bird’s “Shaw ‘Nuff,” all display fine ensemble work. This group handles everything with the aplomb of seasoned experts and the excitement of musicians doing what they love to do.
