Curtain Calling Planet Earth

In what is arguably the hippest move in secondary education ever, the Louis Armstrong Middle School in East Elmhurst, Queens will honor free-jazz pioneer Sun Ra (pictured left) in early June with an original jazz musical. The musical, entitled Message From Saturn, also honors pianist/arranger Mary Lou Williams and was co-written and produced by Eli Yamin and Clifford Carlson. Yamin is a jazz composer, pianist and educator commissioned by the school (with help from The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, PTA, and Project Arts) to aid Carlson, the school’s drama director, in the production and arrangement of the music.

Over sixty students from the Louis Armstrong school will perform and produce the production of Message to Saturn, so titled because Sun Ra claimed to have come from the ringed planet. Performances will be held on June 5, 6, and 8, during school hours and the final performance on June 9 will begin at 7 pm. For more information, call 718-335-7500.
