Comp CDs to Benefit JAI

What the world needed was a couple more jazz compilation CDs. Jazz Alliance International is happy to have sated the world. The new Hear and Now jazz compilation CDs the Alliance recently released with help from BET Jazz offer something for the contemporary jazz fan and those smoothers you’re going to need stocking stuffers for.

A straightahead and accessible affair, Jazz Hear and Now includes tracks from the kind of folks we like to put on the cover of JazzTimes: Diana Krall, Dave Holland, Brad Mehldau, Joe Lovano, Cassandra Wilson, etc. None of the tracks are exclusive, each has appeared on an album before.

Like its title suggests, the other CD, Smooth Jazz Hear and Now, compiles tunes cut by stars of the smooth jazz scene, musicians like Norman Brown, Jeff Lorber, Marc Antoine and Chris Botti. They also slipped Norah Jones’ Grammy-winning single “Don’t Know Why” into the mix. Somebody ought to tell ’em that Norah ain’t even a smooth jazz singer (that’s not to say she can’t sing; the girl has lovely pipes). Track lists for both of these discs follow this next bit about keeping jazz alive.

Proceeds from both releases benefit Jazz Alliance International, a non-profit organization that supports and seeks to raise the profile of jazz and the musicians who make it. More info on the Alliance, and these releases, can be found at BET Jazz has a Web site too:
