Columbia/Harlem Festival of Global Jazz Begins Today

The Columbia/Harlem Festival of Global Jazz takes place beginning today on the Columbia University campus in New York City and at venues throughout Harlem. Presented by the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University and the Office of the President, the festival continues until Saturday, Sept. 29.

The festival brings together leading improvisers, composers, journalists and scholars from more than 16 countries for 10 days of performances, conferences, symposia, film screenings and technology-based community events, all open to the public. The Center for Jazz Studies is partnering with the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone and Jazzmobile Inc.

Among the artists performing at the festival are the Global Unity Orchestra, David Murray and Kidd Jordan’s Jazz Allstars, the Monty Alexander Jazz and Roots Ensemble, Lionel Loueke, Somi (pictured), the Randy Weston Quintet, the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Steve Coleman and the Mystic Rhythm Society and others.
