Claudio Roditi: Mind Games—Live

Trumpeter Roditi assembles a talented group of German musicians for this live Berlin recording. The 12 tunes combine straightahead, progressive and Latin elements. The opening cut, “Los Uncoolos,” has pianist Bastian Pusch doing a montuno bit to get everyone in a Latin groove. Drummer Csaba Schmitz and percussionist Stephen Maass provide strong underpinning on “La Vida del Senor Lorenzo” and the samba “Susanata.” “Hasta Pronto” is a driving, straightahead number. “Lost Song” is a ballad featuring tenorist Andy Mulo Franzl with Stephen Maass on congas. The excellent vocals on “Love for Sale,” “As Everybody Sees I’m Old Fashioned,” “Quiet Adventure,” “Moondance” and “Nostalgia” are by Lisa Wahlandt. Roditi’s warm vocals are heard on “Corcovado.” With the exception of “Moondance” and “Corcovado,” all compositions are by Andy Mulo Franzl. In his typical fashion, Roditi is exceptional on trumpet and fluegelhorn. So too Ulrich Wangenheim on alto sax and flute, and the aforementioned Franzl on clarinet, tenor and soprano sax.
