Chuck Loeb: When I’m With You

Guitarist Chuck Loeb honors those who are important to him on When I’m With You (Shanachie). As he did on 2002’s All There Is, Loeb dedicates several tracks to individuals who have influenced his life. Loeb formerly played in Stan Getz’s band, and he pays tribute to the late sax legend with a joyful version of “The Girl From Ipanema” that features a slightly sped-up tempo and some inventive improvising on the melody. The jovial but soulful jazz-blues tune “Brother Ray” honors the late Ray Charles, and Loeb salutes guitarist Jim Hall on the slinky, horn-punctuated “Double Life.” Not all of the dedications are to famous musicians-the happy, upbeat “Jumpstart” is dedicated to pianist Mike Ricchiuti’s new baby. Loeb’s last album, 2003’s eBop, reflected his interest in electronic music, and “Tropical” features an electronic groove underneath Loeb’s nimble guitar work. Loeb’s wife, singer Carmen Cuesta, appears on the title track, a graceful bossa nova whose lyrics offer tender reflections on love.
