Chris Botti: When I Fall in Love

Chris Botti

Chris Botti’s When I Fall in Love (Columbia), an elegant collection of romantic standards recorded with the London Session Orchestra, may seem like a departure for the trumpeter, who’s known for more contemporary fare, but it’s actually a perfect fit. Botti’s gorgeously lyrical trumpet voice is well-suited to this material, and he delivers especially rich, beautiful readings of the title track and “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

Botti toured extensively with Sting over the past several years-an association that still continues-and the singer makes an appearance here, singing in French on the Brazilian-tinged “La Belle Dame Sans Regrets,” which he cowrote. Botti’s atmospheric take on Sade’s “No Ordinary Love”-the only track that doesn’t feature strings-features his moody, muted trumpet gliding over a gentle groove. Botti, keyboardist Billy Childs, bassist Brian Bromberg, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and percussionist Paulinho DaCosta swing their way through “Let’s Fall in Love,” and Childs turns in a beautiful solo on the dramatic “Cinema Paradiso.” “What’ll I Do” features heartfelt vocals by singer Paula Cole, although the song doesn’t really need a singer, since Botti’s trumpet caresses the melody sensuously and expressively.

Maybe Botti’s reading of “Make Some-one Happy” could be a touch more, well, happy, but overall, When I Fall In Love is an impressive outing from this talented and versatile artist.
