Chirgilchin: The Wolf and the Kid

For more indigenous Tuvan fare, proceed to The Wolf and the Kid, by the trio called Chirgilchin (Shanachie 64070: 65:37), which translates to “miracle” or “mirage.” Formed only last year, the trio features two 22-year-olds and the 18-year-old female vocalist Aidysmaa Kandan, youths obviously entrenched in the ancient traditions of their country. The album hums with the stuff of Tuvan eloquence: haunting laments, rustic melodies, droning bowed strings, and allusions to natural and animal life-replete with faux animal sounds. If this group is any indication, Tuvan kids these days are doing just fine, and have ample respect for their elders.
