To celebrate his 70th birthday, jazz bassist Charlie Haden will play a weeklong stand at Blue Note Jazz Club & Restaurant in New York, hosting some of his favorite pianists in a duo setting. Beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 7, Haden will be joined by Kenny Barron, followed by Ethan Iverson on Aug. 8, Paul Bley on Aug. 9, and Brad Mehldau for the final three nights, Aug. 10-12. The shows will be held at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. every night. The club’s in-house label Half Note Records will record the sessions.
In 1959 Haden made history when he joined up with Ornette Coleman as a member of the saxophonist’s quartet, along with trumpeter Don Cherry and drummer Billy Higgins. An iconic bassist and composer today, Haden is also known for his work with the Liberation Music Orchestra, an experimental big band he founded in 1969 with pianist and composer Carla Bley.
Blue Note Jazz Club is located at 131 West 3rd St in Manhattan. Tickets for opening night run $35 table/$20 bar; $30 table/$20 bar for the second evening; $35 table/$20 bar for the third night and $45 table/$30 bar for the three nights featuring Mehldau.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
