Charles Lloyd Honors Billy Higgins With New Album

In September, ECM will release Charles Lloyd’s Hyperion With Higgins, Lloyd’s eighth album for the label. The eight-song collection is dedicated to drummer Billy Higgins, Lloyd’s longtime friend and collaborator, who died on May 3.

The new album is drawn from the same sessions that yielded Lloyd’s last ECM album, The Water is Wide. The lineup remains the same with guitarist John Abercrombie, pianist Brad Mehldau, and bassist Larry Grenadier playing alongside Lloyd and Higgins. Unlike The Water Is Wide, which featured a number of Ellington tunes, Hyperion with Higgins is made up entirely of Lloyd originals.

This summer Lloyd will play at the Playboy Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival. Two weeklong stints – one at New York’s Blue Note, the other at Chicago’s Jazz Showcase – are planned for September.
