Cesaria Evora: Rogamar

This latest collection from Cesaria Evora, the barefoot morna diva of Cape Verde, was recorded in Mindelo, Paris, and Rio. The CD was produced by her longtime accompanist, pianist Fernando Andrade, and it pays homage to the unpredictably changeable sea that defines, both physically and metaphorically, so much of Cape Verdean life, extending from the mistily contemplative stillness of “São Tomé na Equador” and breezy tropical joyousness of the title track to the roiling waves of uncertainty that shape “Modje Troffel” and, in closing, a saltwater kiss of faraway possibilities (“Vega Lenta”). As is true of so many prior Evora outings, what might seem prettily melodic background music for uptown dinner parties is truly as powerful and mysterious as the ocean depths.
