Cesaria Evora: Miss Perfumado

From another corner of Africa suddenly in the world music news, the Afro-Portuguese terrain of Cape Verde, comes the reissue of the album that started the brilliant career of the compelling, musk-toned singer Cesaria Evora. Recorded in 1992, Miss Perfumado (Nonesuch 79509; 63:19) contains many of the tunes we already know from her live set-including the lustrous, sad, and seductive tune “Sodade” opening the album. The album made her a sensation in France, and the following two releases on Nonesuch earned her a Grammy, a place in the Western music industry, and a still-expanding following the world over. This one, before the storm of popularity, is a bold and cherishable addition to the collection.
