Cecil Brooks III Opens Club

Roughly 20 miles outside of New York City, in West Orange, N.J., is Cecil’s, a new jazz club owned by drummer Cecil Brooks III. The club opened in late June after a year of renovation-the location used to be home to an eating establishment called Giuseppi’s. The space is now a spacious, full-service jazz club with a grand piano, a Hammond B3 organ and stage lights. There’s also a bar, of course, and a restaurant that currently serves from a lunch and bar menu.

Though the club is only a few weeks old Brooks, who has played with Pharoah Sanders, Houston Person and Geri Allen, among others, doesn’t seem to be a behind-the-scenes entrepreneur. He’s climbed onstage with most everybody who has performed at the club-and Brooks’ own group, the CB III Band, plays at the club every Friday and Saturday night.
