CDs from Barber, Moran and Others on the Way

Reissued Duke Ellington, new releases from Patricia Barber (pictured) and Jason Moran, a Woody Herman box set and more recordings are on the way from various labels in the coming months. Below is a list of forthcoming releases with street dates (if the CD title is a link, clicking on it will take you to a previous piece we’ve written about it). Here’s some extra info on a few upcoming releases:

Singer Patricia Barber’s forthcoming Blue Note album will document her recent tour of France with her long-standing quartet: guitarist Neal Alger, bassist Mike Arnopol, and drummer Erik Monztka. The album has no official title yet, but has a release date of Sept. 7. It will include new songs along with oldies from Barber’s past studio efforts. Barber’s last record was 2002’s Verse (Blue Note).

Pianist Jason Moran will record a follow-up to last year’s The Bandwagon this May with Moran-regulars bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, plus guitarist Marvin Sewell, who has played on records by singer Cassandra Wilson and trumpeter Tom Harrell. No release date or title has been set, but the album is a concept project that will have Moran and Co. tackling the blues.

Latin-jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba recorded his next album in Miami earlier this month with bassist Armando Gola, drummer Ignacio Berroa and saxophonist Felipe Gonzales on saxophones. The disc will consist entirely of Rubalcaba originals.
