Carri Coltrane: The First Time

Carri Coltrane is a painter of moods. A compelling vocalist, she is backed by a sextet that includes drummer Lewis Nash, bassist Ron Carter, and soprano saxophonist Matt Langley, as well as a full string orchestra, conducted by Charlie Ernst. Coltrane sings several numbers by producer Eugene McDaniels, including the hit, “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” and “Something Real,” which reminded me of Bonnie Raitt. This lavishly produced release with a strong pop sensibility should have wide appeal.
