Carmen Lundy: Old Devil Moon

A vocalist of some degree of mystery-now she’s here, now she’s not-who seems to disappear off the scene for prolonged periods, Carmen Lundy here mixes a jazz standard approach with acoustic accompaniment, with a contemporary approach that transitions easily with the standards. Like the relaxed look she exudes on the cover photo; beverage in hand, music and mike at the ready, Carmen Lundy approached this date as a singer seemingly at peace with her considerable artistry.

Seven standards are blended with four rather telling Lundy originals. Her tunes are love songs which are sequenced on the album as if a storyline is at work; beginning with love denial (“You’re Not In Love”), wending its way through concern (“I’m Worried About You Baby”) to wits end (“At The End Of My Rope”), concluding with dreams of a future (“Love Me Forever”)-all rendered in a rather autobiographical fashion. The most successful of these is “You’re Not in Love,” delivered in understatement, invested within the sweet spot of her voice, her rich lower register. Guest Randy Brecker sweetens the pot with a lovely fluegelhorn break. There is so much potential for irony in this supple voice.
