Now that Cal Ripken, Jr., has hung up his spikes after a glorious baseball career, he has decided to fill in the time before he gives a humble, inspiring speech at Cooperstown in five years by experimenting with a career in music. Or music narration, anyway. On a new CD called Holiday Greetings, Ripken rocks the mic with his rendition of “The Night Before Christmas” with accompaniment courtesy of the Towson University Symphonic Band.
The CD also features performances by the Towson Jazz Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Chamber Singers, University Orchestra and other ensembles, all under the aegis of (surprise!) the Towson University Department of Music. They perform selections that range from Pyotr Iliych Tchaikovsky and Michael Praetorius to Frank Loesser and Leroy Anderson.
