Butanes Soul Revue: One Night

The Butanes Soul Revue offers a heap of funk and soul on One Night (Atomic Theory 1139; 59:47), combining the best aspects of Roomful Of Blues, Tower Of Power and vintage Sly & The Family Stone. Frontman Maurice Jacox’s sly, impassioned vocals are most effective on Otis Clay’s “A Nickel And A Nail” and The Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing.” Guitarist Curtis Obeda stings on the Albert Collins signature piece “I Ain’t Drunk” and swings on “Gate Walks To Board,” an homage to Clarence Gatemouth Brown, while Virgil Nelson pumps the grease on Hammond B-3 behind a punchy four-horn attack. A great ten-piece R&B act caught live at their regular Wednesday night haunt, The Cabooze in Minneapolis.
