Buddy Childers: West Coast Quintet

Now 70, and with the studio scene well behind him, longtime lead trumpeter Childers finally has the time to relax and play jazz with some of his old friends, among them Jimmy Zito, who here plays warm and fluent valve-trombone. Jimmy’s solo features are on “Street Of Dreams” and J.J. Johnson’s “Lament,” while on the other tracks the two senior citizens amply demonstrate their ability to show the younger generations some things about the construction of logical solos and interweaving polyphony. The forwardly propulsive time is generated by pianist Brian O’Rourke, bassist John Leitham and drummer Paul Kreibach.
