Tribute to the Trumpet Masters, a quartet date, includes dedications to nine trumpeters. Morgan’s “Search for the New Land” and Lynch’s “Charles Tolliver” are two of the most exotic tunes. “Woody Shaw,” another Lynch original, captures the angularity, focus and urgency in that late trumpeter’s style. His “Tribute to Blue” recalls Mitchell’s relaxed, swinging, melodic attributes.
Accompanied by pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Carl Allen, Lynch applies his own fluid linear style to each composition. The intent is less to mimic each trumpeter than to imply certain elements of their style via his own running approach. Lynch plays straightahead and nails what he aims for.
