Bob Stata: Solid State

The chronic problem with recorded bass is that it’s often hard to hear, and bassist Bob Stata does himself a disservice playing it low key to his bandmates. You need to turn up to hear him on this set of tunes composed by him and Justin Flynn and David Gibson. Trombonist Gibson and saxophonist Flynn play unison a lot, which sometimes sounds a tad close to smooth jazz, particularly when Flynn plays soprano. Darrell Grant’s piano, however, is striking and stirring. Also contributing their own vibrant touches, especially on “Wood Could,” are Joe Locke on vibes and drummer Charles Ruggiero.
