The BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra will present its 14th annual showcase concert next week at New York’s Merkin Hall. During the concert, to be held at 8 p.m. on July 11, the winner of the 3rd annual Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize will be announced.
Given to the writer of the best new work composed in the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, the award will include a cash prize and a commission, named in the memory of Manny Albam, who served as musical director of the workshop until his death last year. Max Roach (pictured), director of Rutgers University jazz studies Dan Morgenstern, radio host Phil Schaap, and director of jazz studies at Queens College Michael Mossman will collaborate to select a winner. The concert is free and open to the public.
The BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra is a 16-piece ensemble composed of New York musicians and focusing on modern repertoire. The group serves as an adjunct of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, which is under the direction of author Burt Korall. The Workshop’s musical directors are Jim McNeely and Michael Abene.
