BMI Jazz Composers Workshop Tomorrow in New York

The BMI Jazz Composers Workshop will present its 20th anniversary summer showcase concert tomorrow at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall. BMI will also award its ninth annual Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize at the event.

The Parker Prize will be given to the writer or composer with the best new work created during the workshop. The competition’s judges include: jazz historian, author and archivist Dan Morgenstern; 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient Jane Ira Bloom (pictured); and Luis Bonilla, the Latin jazz tromobonist/composer who was once a sideman to Dizzy Gillespie.

The show celebrates the best in jazz composition in the past year and will feature a performance by the 17-piece BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra. The modern ensemble is made up of leading New York musicians, according to a BMI press release.

The Composers Workshop “was formed to provide an environment where the composer has the freedom to explore new avenues in the creative process, while at the same time honing and solidifying his or her skills,” according to BMI.

Tickets to the show are free, with seating on first-come first-serve basis. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Merkin Concert Hall is located at the Abraham Goodman House at 129 West 67th Street in Manhattan.
