Blue Note Records announced the July release of 15 new titles in its Rudy Van Gelder Edition reissue series. Van Gelder (pictured left) remastered the CDs from the original 16-inch lacquers and 10-inch LP masters for the best sound quality.
The new CDs feature complete sessions from Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Art Blakey, J.J. Johnson, Milt Jackson and Clifford Brown. Usually “complete sessions” also means the tunes are placed on the disc in the order they were played, forcing the listener to endure back-to-back, 12-minute versions of “Bag’s Groove,” but Blue Note promises the tracks on the new CDs will be arranged in a “listener-friendly” order. Obsessive collector’s take note: these discs include five newly discovered Bud Powell Trio tracks and one rare Clifford Brown take.
Blue Note will package the new CDs with reproductions of the original 10-inch LP cover art, Francis Wolff’s session photographs and new liner notes by journalist Bob Blumenthal.
