Blue Note Compiles Grant Green Retrospective

He had the tools. He had the talent. He laid down the groove that made your booty move and on Oct. 22 you can get all the best Grant Green had to offer in Blue Note’s 4-CD box set, The Grant Green Retrospective.

The collection is a fully remastered set of 39 tunes originally recorded by Alfred Lion and Rudy Van Gelder and compiled here by reissue producer Michael Cuscuna with liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. The first two discs feature Green’s bluesier efforts with Baby Face Willette, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, John Patton and Larry Young. Disc three highlights the guitarist’s straight-ahead work with Sam Rivers, Sonny Clark, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey and Billy Higgins. The final disc showcases Green’s studio sessions with Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Booker Ervin, Stanley Turrentine and Ike Quebec.
