Birdland Hosts Django Festival

The Django Reinhardt Festival, now in its second year, continues to celebrate the European “King of Jazz” by bringing European musicians stateside for concerts by Europeans and Yankees alike. The New York City festival is hosted by Birdland, presented by Absolut Vodka, and was created by Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta.

While the festival proper runs Nov. 27 to Dec. 2, a grace note will be dropped on Nov. 16 by the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, presenting a symphonic interpretation of Django’s music conducted by Stratta.

The Nov. 27-29 lineup at Birdland features a “true gypsy” interpretation of Django’s music by guitarists/brothers Boulou and Elios Ferre, French pianist Alain Jean Marie, and a trio composed of guitarists Angelo Debarre and Frank Vignola and Jon Burr, a bassist who has played with Django’s longtime partner Stephane Grappelli. James Carter will also be dropping by on the 27th.

The Debarre/Vignola/Burr trio will return Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 to play with gypsy guitarist/violinist Dorado Schmitt. Guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli will make it an even four guitarists on Dec. 2.
