Bird Festival Flies in New York

Bird lovers take note: The Ninth Annual Charlie Parker Jazz Festival comes to the parks of New York City for two days of free, high-flying outdoor concerts Aug. 25 and 26.

On the bill Sat. Aug. 25 at Marcus Garvey Park are the Bobby Sanabria Big Band with Charles McPherson, the Drummonds, the Gary Bartz Quintet with Eddie Henderson, Houston Person and Etta Jones, the Barry Harris Trio with Jimmy Heath and Antonio Hart and more.

The birds fly to Tompkins Square Park (dubbed Charlie Parker Place) Sun. Aug. 26, for a full day of music with the Roy Haynes Quartet with Graham Haynes, the Joe Lovano Nonet, the Earl May Quintet with David Glasser and Catherine Russell, the Dick Katz Trio, Joe Wilder, Bucky Pizzarelli, Rufus Reid and Jackie Williams.

The Saturday events run from 3-9 p.m.; Sunday’s 2-7 p.m. All events are rain or shine.
