Big Bad Voodoo Daddy: Save My Soul

During my unfortunate Swingers phase-when I shouted “You’re so money!” so many times that whenever a girl actually talked to me it was considered an act of God-I listened to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy all the time, and with good reason (you know, besides wanting to score with a babble-inducing blonde who looked like Heather Graham). Formed in 1992, the SoCal studs fused unbridled punk energy with free-form manic swing. There was nothing like them then (and maybe not since). The big bad band put on weekly must-see shows in such packed-and-sweaty L.A. clubs as the notorious Brown Derby. And in 1996, when Vince Vaughn was onscreen bopping around to BBVD’s viciously ass-moving “You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three Tonight (Baby),” well, the Daddies were the kings.

But as we all know, the swing scene took a massive commercial header a few years ago, and soon it was nothing but the true-blue fans who were there before we all lemminged on over. So it’s nice to report that-besides the fact that I finally found a woman to talk to me-BBVD have only gotten wilder and bolder with their sound. On their new album, the boys take their CBGB-meets-the Dresden vibe down to the Big Sleezy for a booze-soaked lesson in Professor Longhair and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Crawdad grease and kudzu funk up such steam-bath burners as “Zig Zaggity Woop Woop (Pts. 1 & 2)” and “Always Gonna Get Ya,” and bandleader Scotty Morris books a trip for Havana on the Latin-grooving “I Like It.”

For old time’s sake: These guys are so money! (I feel dirty.)
