The Berklee College of Music has just announced the sixth Jimmy Lyons Scholarship Competition. The competition is open to Northern California students and awards the winner a full scholarship.
The contest honors the memory and dedication of educator and Monterey Jazz Festival founder Jimmy Lyons. The scholarship is designed to encourage young, talented musicians to expand and develop their talent as well as their knowledge. The recipient will also have an opportunity to play live at the festival with a group of top Berklee students.
Competitors will be chosen from the taped performances received, of which the top 25 performers will be invited to audition during the Monterey Jazz Festival High School Jazz Competition.
An annual event since 1996, the Lyons Scholarship Competition will be held at the 44th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, on the Festival’s Jimmy Lyons Stage September 21-23. To apply, students should contact Berklee College of Music, Office of Scholarships, at (617) 747-8681 or (617) 747-2579, and ask for a Jimmy Lyons Scholarship application. Applications must be received before before March 9th.
